What is LGBTQIA+?

LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and the “+” includes other identities not specifically listed.

This community represents a rich spectrum of experiences and identities that challenge traditional norms and demand inclusion, equality, and respect.

Breakdown of Identities

Lesbian – Women attracted to other women.
Gay – A term often used for men attracted to other men, but can be used broadly.
Bisexual – People attracted to more than one gender.
Transgender – Individuals whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth.
Queer or Questioning – An umbrella term for non-heteronormative identities; or someone exploring their identity.
Intersex – People born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit typical definitions of male or female.
Asexual – Individuals who experience little or no sexual attraction to others.

Gay Identity

The term "gay" typically refers to individuals who are attracted to members of the same gender. While often associated with men, it can encompass anyone who identifies with same-gender attraction.

Used broadly most of the time.

Transgender Identity

Transgender individuals have a gender identity that differs from the sex assigned to them at birth. This identity can encompass a wide range of experiences and expressions.

Nonbinary Identity

Nonbinary is an umbrella term for gender identities that don't fit within the traditional binary of male and female. Nonbinary individuals may identify with aspects of both, neither, or fall outside these categories entirely.

Why It Matters

Representation and inclusion save lives.

Discrimination and misunderstanding can have severe mental health consequences. By understanding and embracing the LGBTQIA+ community, society becomes stronger, more compassionate, and more just.

How You Can Be an Ally

Use inclusive language.

Being an ally is about action, not just words.
